Hair Training Update

A few months ago I published an article about my experience with hair training. In the last month, I’ve decided to stop this method of trying to extend the time between washes. Here’s why.

Why I Stopped Hair Training

My reasons to stop hair training were twofold:

  1. My hair was getting increasingly greasy.
By the end of day 2, especially after showering (with a shower cap), my roots looked like they were dipped in oil. This could be due do the changing temperatures or dryness in the air, or it could be due to the shampoos I was using (alternating between Olaplex and Bondi Boost). However, I did try switching to the Kerastase shampoo without too much of a noticeable difference in hair fall out.
  2. I was noticing a lot of hair fallout in the shower.
This was in addition to the hair that would come out when brushing. I would have a bunch of strands come out when applying conditioner. When I asked my hair stylist about this, he said it might just be the broken hair falling out, which is normal, and that the haircut should help to alleviate it. Unfortunately, the fallout didn’t stop after the haircut.

Results Since Stopping Hair Training

I now wash my hair whenever I feel like it’s getting too greasy, instead of trying to not wash it if it’s too soon since my last wash. Sometimes that means after day 2, sometimes it means after day 3, depending on whether or not I use dry shampoo. I do try to limit dry shampoo use to when I need to extend washing for some reason, and I’ve found that it’s best to use the dry shampoo before the hair gets too greasy.

Besides changing the frequency of the wash and the shampoo, I’ve also stopped using hair oil. Perhaps I’ve made too many changes to be able to scientifically pinpoint the cause of the hair loss. Sill, since making these changes I’ve notices less fallout in the shower, so I’ve accomplished my goal.

The Verdict

My opinion is still that hair training works for some hair types and not for others. Searching for articles on hair training for fine hair, some say it works and some don’t recommend it. You’ll never really know until you try it for yourself. So if you’re up for giving it a few months, then it might be worth a try. Just make sure to be prepared for either outcome.
