Dyson Airwrap Review-Is It Worth the Price?

Everyone from celebrities to influencers are raving about the Dyson Airwrap, but at $550, is it worth the price for us “regular” folks? I decided to try it and my answer to that isn’t a simple “yes” or “no.” Here’s my honest Dyson Airwrap review.

Dyson Airwrap on Fine Hair

As you may know by now, I have quite fine, thin hair. This has always posed a challenge, from scalp oiliness to holding a style. A big part of why I decided to try the Airwrap is because it seemed to make styling so much easier. Of course, I was influenced by some of my favorites: Andreea Ali, Candace Cameron, Mary Orton, Risa Does Makeup. Also the fact that it always seems to go out of stock made me think that it’s worth a try. I put it on my wishlist and got it as my combined birthday/Christmas gift.

Ordering Tip

The Dyson Airwrap Complete comes with a dryer attachment as well as five styling attachments: two barrels (1.6 inch and 1.2 inch), and three brushes. While most people order the standard Airwrap Complete, I recommend using Dyson’s hair diagnostic tool to customize your Airwrap. For me, this meant instead of the firm smoothing brush, I got an extra set of smaller 0.8 inch barrels, and also a longer version of the barrels based on my hair length. I’m really glad I did this, since I’ve only ever used the dryer and the barrels, never the brushes. The only downside of the customized longer barrels is that they don’t fit as nicely in the case.

Using the Airwrap

The first time I used the Airwrap, I was immediately delighted by the perfect curl it created…until 10 seconds later when the curl had totally fallen out. I felt as deflated as my curl. Granted, I did not use any styling products. With some more practice, I got slightly better results and found that it works best for me when the hair is almost completely dry before doing the curling. If the hair is too wet it doesn’t get picked up by the air stream.

The Lows

Even after about a month of practice, I still can’t achieve the same look as the influencers all seem to create. Maybe it’s my haircut, maybe it’s my hair type, maybe it’s my technique…although I do try to emulate what I see in the instructional videos on Dyson’s website and YouTube videos.

Another disappointment is that the style I am able to achieve is overall extremely similar to other techniques like using a curling iron or hot rollers.

The Highs

While I still haven’t been able to create the looks I see on others, I am comforted by the idea that the Dyson Airwrap doesn’t use extreme heat, so I feel that my hair is better protected. Another positive is that I actually really enjoy using it, and styling is pretty fast.

Tip: Try It Before You Buy It

If it weren’t for the Pandemic, I would have booked an appointment for a styling consultation at a Dyson Demo Store in order to get a better sense of the style that the Airwrap can create on me. If there’s a store near you, I strongly recommend that you try that before committing. I’m planning to go in the future to learn how to use mine better.

The Verdict

So, at $550, is the Dyson Airwrap worth it? If you take the price into consideration, and the fact that the style achieved is pretty much the same as using a curling iron or hot rollers…then I’d have to say no. While admittedly I love using it, I wouldn’t buy it again, nor do I rave about it to my friends (like I do about my Sarah Flint shoes). If the Dyson were half the price I’d probably feel differently and I’d fully love it.
